Hedge trimming falls under the Wildlife Act of 1976, and the amendment in 2000, so it’s illegal to cut ditches from 1st March to 31st August (inclusive), with a few exceptions. If you come across illegal hedge trimming, please contact the Gardaí or the National Park and Wildlife Service on 01-8883242 or Lo-call 1890-383000.
Some have commented that it is because the farmers lose money unless they cut the hedgerows and trees back. However the Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed TD, has issued a statement that indicates that this is not the case. In fact, farmers are required to retain and maintain these under GAEC 7 rules, and receive payment for doing so.
